If you are operating in a niche sector or industry, then the internet will be central to the potential success of your business. Narrow the Market
The main objective for niche businesses is to recognise that that is what they are, and behave accordingly. It is no good to take a blanket approach and aim for words that thousands of people will search for, or that may not be relevant to you.
Take a fireworks company as one example. One may be tempted to try to rank for keywords that will be searched a lot, such as “Guy Fawkes” or “Bonfire Night.” This is silly for two reasons.
- People don’t just buy fireworks at one time of the year.
- It is probably an irrelevant search term, as the two key phrases identified above would more likely be children researching.
Narrow down the market and be as specific as possible. 1,000 hits for a word that will convert is better than 100,000 for one that won’t.
Stake Out Competitors
Unless you are the first business of your kind, in which case you should have a free golden ticket to success, then take the time to look at what your competitors are doing.
This again has two purposes.
- Understand what they do well.
- Understand what they are failing on, become great at it yourself, and use it to grow your business.
Point two in particular is extremely important. Three or four niche businesses doing the same things well won’t stand out – one of them doing something different, and brilliantly, will do.
One of the things with a niche business is that you get into the thinking that, because you are small and have a relatively specific and easy to target demographic, you can do SEO all on your own.
