How Often Should You Be Updating Your Website?

You’ve done it.  You’ve finally gotten your business a website.  Well done!  Do you get to relax and let the masses find you while you rake in the business? Nope.  Sorry.  Now the real work, the maintenance, kicks in.

How much you update, and what you update, on your website depends on the kind of business you run.  Do you offer services? Do you have an e-Commerce store? Are you in the entertainment industry?  Below is a general outline of sections of your website to update and how frequently you should be doing so.

Blog
Did I just scare you? Many people shudder at the thought of blogging.  However, it can be a crucial tool to pulling people into your website.  It gives them a more personal view of you and your company.  It’s a good idea for any business to have a blog.  You don’t have to go crazy on it.  But posting a new blog once a week is a great idea.  You can make it funny or informative and keep it relevant to your town, line of business or current news.  It doesn’t have to be long.  And remember to have fun with it!  You can watch your views slowly start rising.

Photos
Having a photo tab works well to give potential customers an immediate visual reference for you and your company.  They can be anything from examples of your work, to pics of events you’ve held, to photos of your community.  Again, anything you can do to make a personal outreach to your customers will pay off in the long run.  Pictures can be updated as frequently as you like.  At least once a week is a good idea.  More if you can swing it.

Videos
Videos are similar to photos, although even more personable.  You can utilize videos to show examples of your work, DIY tips, community events and video blogs.  The more you can regularly update these, the more likely you are to build a following.  And it’s incredibly easy to shoot them on your smart-phone, upload to youtube and then imbed on your site.

News
If your website has a news tab (or any sort of update tab), this should be updated frequently.  You want your customers to see that you’re staying busy.  So anytime you run a special, throw an event, have a new product, or are speaking at a convention you should be updating your news tab.  Generally you can keep it quick little tidbits that get the info to your followers.  Updating this at least once a week is great.  And don’t forget to push out updates on your social media sites and drive traffic right back to your website.
