IP technologies allow telephone calls to be made over an IP network, such as the internet, instead of just Public Telephone Switch Network or PTSN.

How does a VoIP phone work?
A VoIP phone lets you make calls over the internet, either to a private IP address or to a company address. Control protocols, such as Session Initiator Controls or SIP, along with Skinny Client Control Protocol, SCCP, are how the phone system operates. Skype is one such company that uses a protocol, so you can talk to friends or family, or even a business associate or client. Because the system works over the internet, it saves on monthly phone bills, saving money in the long run. Equipment needed for a VoIP phone
In order to use the VoIP system, you need a high speed internet connection (broadband) either over a secure DSL connection, local area network, or cable modem. You will also need an adapter, specialized phone or computer to use the phone system.  If you use your computer, you will need some software and an inexpensive microphone. A specialized phone plugs directly into your broadband, allowing you to use it like a traditional phone.  By using a VoIP adapter, you can call out just like a regular telephone, and even receive a dial tone by your service provider. Now that’s freedom.

Advantages of using a VoIP phone system

There are many advantages to using this type of system, number one being, of course, to save money. By switching to a VoIP phone, you can get rid of land lines and expensive phone systems. Unlimited minute flat-rate billing is another great advantage because you can have a corporate phone system over the internet, without it costing a small fortune. Your office can virtually be anywhere a VoIP phone can fit into any broadband connection, so you’re not limited to just a company office. This phone system also gives you like extension to extension and free long distance calling. You can also forward your calls to a landline or mobile device when you’re vacationing in the Bahamas and just want to soak up the sun.
